Non-Woking related/off-topic: World Cup thoughts/predictions

Post by TWR-Madrid Cardinal » Wed Jun 13, 2018 6:53 pm

With just one day to go, just wondering:

1. How far do you think England will go?
2. Who do you think will win the tournament?
3. Who do you want to win it (besides England)?
4. Who will be the surprise team this time around?
5. Surprise underachiever?
6. Who will be top scorer?
7. Do you follow any other country apart from your own (if they are in it - Bobbo, who will you be supporting?!)?

For me:
1. I think we'll make it out of the group and that's it.
2. France
3. Colombia (someone new!)
4. Denmark
5. Was going to say Brazil, but then today happened, so maybe Spain...
6. Griezmann
7. Mexico, and because I have to due to location, Spain.

1. Quarter finals
2. Germany
3. Argentina. I think it would be fitting for Messi to have a WC winners medal to go along with the club awards he’s won.
4. Hopefully Nigeria, as I’ve got them in the work sweepstake.
5. Brazil.
6. Timo Werner
7. Not really

Apologies to anyone backing Germany for the win.

I got them in the office sweepstake and with my terrible football betting history the Germans’ poor record in Russia will continue for a few weeks yet :-(

No real preference, except for England to win every game four-nil. That's just never going to happen so for me sending Germany home after beating them on penalties in the semi-final to put the memory of Italia'90 to bed forever would do for me.

In the final, anyone but the Argies to lift the Cup.1986 still needs avenging!!

1. How far do you think England will go? Quarters
2. Who do you think will win the tournament? Germany
3. Who do you want to win it (besides England)? Belgium or an outsider
4. Who will be the surprise team this time around? Uruguay is a great shout above, but I’ll go France/Tunisia
5. Surprise underachiever? Argentina
6. Who will be top scorer? Jesus
7. Do you follow any other country apart from your own (if they are in it - Bobbo, who will you be supporting?!)? Not really. I like to see the underdogs do well, but this time I am quite excited to see Germany, France, Brazil, Spain and Argentina play. I think it’s because I know a lot more of their players than I used to

1. How far do you think England will go? Last 16
2. Who do you think will win the tournament? Germany
3. Who do you want to win it (besides England)? Peru (because I've got them in the office sweepstake!)
4. Who will be the surprise team this time around? Egypt
5. Surprise underachiever? Belgium
6. Who will be top scorer? T Muller
7. Do you follow any other country apart from your own No, but one of my work colleagues comes from Sweden and drew Germany in the office sweepstake but insisted on swapping with the bloke who drew Sweden so it would be funny if Sweden won!

1. How far do you think England will go?
Quarter final

2. Who do you think will win the tournament?
France.

3. Who do you want to win it (besides England)?
I’m Scottish, so I don’t want England to win! (Sorry...) Messi deserves a world cup win but not sure I can bring myself to support Argentina. Got some money on France, so maybe them.

4. Who will be the surprise team this time around?
Denmark

5. Surprise underachiever?
Argentina

6. Who will be top scorer?
Neymar

7. Do you follow any other country apart from your own (if they are in it - Bobbo, who will you be supporting?!)?
No, not really.

I feel like a boy with a broken leg, watching other guys play football with his ball, peeping from the window, screaming at time...
I'd like to say I'm supporting England, but following the nicest girls team Brazil...

moving on from this, with the WC in 2026 going to 48 teams do you think we will ever hold the WC again, even with a combined England/Scotland/Wales event.
Whilst we have the stadia, do we have the other infrastructure to hold it (hotels, transport etc). 48 teams with all the fans is a lot of people.
As such, will the WC now only be held in places like Russia, America, Australia and possibly a combined mid-European one.

Whichever option gives FIFA the most £££££ (/Swiss Francs, or whatever they do their deals in now...)

As a serious response, I think it will be multi-country tournaments now, lile the USA/Canada/Mexico one.

We’re hosting the final of Euro 2020 aren’t we? That might be the best we will get in the next 20 years.

Multi country tournaments are a terrible idea though.

I would think England is one of very few countries around the world that could solo host a 48 team world cup, if it wanted to and the government supported it.

The stadiums are all there, distances between cities are relatively short, hotel accommodation is widely available and, whilst it's not without faults, there is a comprehensive air, road and rail network.
