Summer Quiz part two.

Post by jonwoozley » Mon Jun 11, 2018 11:58 pm

A few more questions to reminisce over before the World Cup.
1. Woking FC claimed that 88/89 was their centenary season, which year was actually their centenary year?!
2. In November '88 which former manager returned to assist BFG?
3. Who out-scored Tim Buzaglo in 88/9, returning after being released in 1985. The following season he made the great career move of following Bill Stoves to Dorking. (Must have the same agent as Mark Dawber who went on to Staines & Chesham!)
4. Woking were 'pipped' to promotion on the final day by which team?
5. Woking's attendances steadily climbed from 350 over this season, April '89 saw Woking's first league crowd over 1,000, who against?
6. Feb '91 saw Woking's first league crowd over 2,000, who against?
7. Nov '91 saw Woking's first league crowd over 3,000, who against?
8. Dec '92 saw Woking's first league crowd over 4,000, who against?
9. Woking gained promotion in 1987, 1990 and 1992, only three players played during each of these three seasons, whom?

Nice to see we were still making PR errors even before I was born!

Most are before my time/I wasn't old enough to remember them, but number one is surely '87? Seen it enough times mentioned by Doylie.

Correct, the club was formed in October 1887. Not in 1889 as previously thought just because someone found H W Robertson's (Club Secretary) notebook and its entries started in May 1889.

Here is the distinguished Herbert William "Bill" Robertson (as Jon mentioned). Bill played in Woking Football Club’s first game on Wheatsheaf Common on November 5th 1887. Born in Brixton in 1871, Bill worked as an Accounts Clerk and lived in Boundary Road, Woking. He eventually became the Cremators captain and then club secretary in 1893.

He’s photographed here at our Horsell Vale Ground in 1896.
