Aldershot have confirmed they’ll be playing their youth team in their FA Trophy replay tomorrow as “they only have 10 fit first team players”. Lol.

The trophy is a nice little earner if if you win it or do well.

Alderpop may want to stick a few first teamers in the mix given the financial situation.

First round (32) £6,000
Second round (16) £7,000
Third round (8) £8,000
Fourth round (4) £10,000
Semi-Final (2) £20,000
Final runners-up (1) £30,000
Final winners (1) £60,000

2 winnable games v Maidenhead over Xmas, think I'd send the youth team tonight rather than use them Boxing Day due to injury. What has Azeem done to them?! Poor sods

Is ti not a case of over budgeting in the past? If Jake Cole is still on same money he was when he left us (significantly more then we were paying as mentioned at the time) then that is a lot of money to pay a bench warmer.

Their current situation is remarkably similar to ours; popular manager pushed team to over perform (on a modest/high budget), budget is increased to go that extra step (and just miss out), cloth cut accordingly and popular manager starts making excuses. Their next stage is hiring an unknown academy manager.

I think the really worrying thing for Aldershot is that allegedly their budget this season is the same as it was last season. Because they struggled for numbers last season (pause for ironic laugh), Wazzock went for a greater quantity of players this time around, which meant a reduction in individual quality. So they're struggling badly on the same budget. Meanwhile, Azeem has said they are losing 25k a month. Without a new financial backer materialising, they will have no option but to reduce the budget drastically next season - and that's the point at which they'll really be up against it.

They'll probably end up like our 16/17 season and finish 18th or so. Some of our crowds were shocking that season - 864 in our 2nd home game of the season and 860 vs Tranmere (with a fair few away fans).

They won't be able to replicate our INCREDIBLE achievement of winning a County Cup though.

Amusing how only 2,000 Bradford fans turned up for their FA Cup replay so they didn't earn much from that.

I don't know if it is their youths playing tonight. They are certainly doing the Sh*ts proud. Currently 3-0 down at Half time.

Complete youth team. Pretty sure Mick McCarthy once got fined for doing that when Wolves played Man United in the FA Cup.

I did have a MASSIVE £20 on Bedford at 4/5 when I saw about the youth team. Odds went down to about 1/3 by the end of yesterday.

Unless you’re stuck in mid table most conference teams just seem to sack off the trophy these days.

Who sponsors the trophy? Might write to them and complain about a team not taking the competition seriously.

Its a real shame, how do they change that ? Our 3 trips to Wembley will be with me forever

Prize money has increased already but I guess it could be more

Replays have to go which would make it more exciting too with ET and pen's.

Unfortunately (and rightly so in my opinion ) aldershot will get fined for this.

@OfficialShots: FT 7-0: And that's full time. Obviously an incredibly difficult situation for us in the build up, but the boys out there did us proud and played their game and are rightly applauded off....

DID US PROUD. What would have been a shit performance then - 14-0?!

It really wasn't "an incredibly difficult situation" for them, they somehow managed to turn it into one.

Anyway, what next for the ten brave soldiers who weren't risked away to mighty Bedford? Will the club decide not to play them in their next league game (against Wrexham) and instead wrap them in cotton wool until their two more obviously winnable holiday games against Maidenhead?

10 fit players? Put them out there then promote some youth players to fill the squad out.

Never thought I'd see such devaluing of a competition at this level

Gary Waddock has been having a sly dig it his board at recent games by only naming 3 subs. If the squad is that depleted he could have fillled the other subs places by using the youth team, not necessarily bringing them on but get them used to the 1st team environment. But he chose not to.
The dig clearly didn't work for him so he now throws the rest of the toys out of the pram by announcing only 10 fit players and decides to conveniently use the youths! Funny that, they can be available selectively!
If the fixture was against Watford in the fa cup do you think he would have done the same?

Standard manager trick - I remember Arry Redknapp naming 2 keepers on the bench for QPR in January, just before the transfer window closed, to hint to the chairman. Think this was just before he spunked £12.5m and £100k/week on Chris Samba who turned out to be dog shit.

Reading some of replies to the Aldershot twitter you would have thought they unluckily lost 1-0 against a higher ranked team. Not got spanked 7-0 by a Southern League Division One side.

The trophy needs a big make over. No replays , more money and to maintain any credibility Alderpop need to be fined.

They are fucking delusional on their board, 7 nill and they are praising the players.

TBF to them I think most are saying don't blame the acadamy lads who were thrown in the deep end, and did as well as can be expected. However they have brought the competition into disrepute. They have openly admitted they had 10 fit 1st team players; they all should have played, if they then got injured tough, that's football. It's a 1st team fixture play your 1st team; they should be fined, and penalties should be issued with regards to future trophy games; maybe banned from next years comp?

I can understand and sympathise that they've probably got injuries (unfortunately you can't miss "Waddock's Weekly Whine" on BBC Radio Hampshire), but they're not exactly bright are they? They could have put a smattering of first team player's in the team, a goalkeeper and a couple of up for it first teamers for instance to get around Rule 15a. But treating the competition and the FA with contempt due to their own partially self inflicted problems will inevitably get them a big lumpy fine.

Not to mention the £6k(?) prize money may have filled their weekly black hole.

Agreed 100% with this point.

To compound their financial downfall I can imagine that the more casual Shots fan - unaware of the finer detail of the actual team that was put out - will have taken a look at last night's drubbing, and will now think twice about bothering to turn up on Saturday for their league game against Wrexham, thereby costing the club further.

I don't dismiss the fact that it entirely possible that they would have still lost with the 10 first teamers and a few academy lads but for goodness sake, at least try to make an effort.
Like Rio, I offer nothing.

I find it amazing that they are still defending that defeat on shotsweb. If we lost 7-0 to a team 2 leagues below us with any team then I’d be embarrassed. Really does go to show how great our youth team is given how many former Woking youth players we have in our squad.
